Pickleball Tournament Rules: Scoring, Formats & Etiquette
Updated August 18, 2026 · 6 min read
You don't need to memorize the rulebook to run a fair pickleball tournament — but a shared understanding of scoring, formats and etiquette prevents most disputes. Here are the essentials organizers and players should agree on before play starts.
Scoring
Games are traditionally played to 11 points, win by 2. Many tournaments use rally scoring (a point on every serve) to keep matches on schedule, while traditional side-out scoring only awards points to the serving side. Decide which you'll use and state it clearly in your rules.
Match format
- Single game to 11 (or 15/21) — fastest, common in large draws.
- Best of 3 to 11 — the standard for medal rounds.
- Set your format per round: pool play to 11, knockout best-of-3.
Serving and faults
Serves are underhand and diagonal, must clear the non-volley zone (the "kitchen"), and only one serve attempt is allowed (no lets on serves in most modern rules). Common faults include stepping into the kitchen on a volley and hitting out of bounds.
Line calls and disputes
In self-officiated matches, players make calls on their own side and give the benefit of the doubt to opponents. For finals, assign an umpire or scorekeeper — a neutral scoreboard removes arguments about the count.
Timeouts and warm-up
Publish your timeout rules (e.g. two 1-minute timeouts per game) and a short warm-up window per court so the day stays on schedule.
Etiquette that keeps events friendly
- Call the score clearly before each serve.
- Wait for play to stop before retrieving stray balls from other courts.
- Shake paddles at the net after the match.

Create a TournamentFrequently asked questions
What score do you play to in a pickleball tournament?
Most tournaments play to 11 points, win by 2. Medal rounds are often best of three games; larger draws may use a single game to 11 or 15 to save time.
What is rally scoring in pickleball?
Rally scoring awards a point on every serve, regardless of who served. It makes match length more predictable, which is why many tournaments use it to stay on schedule.
Do players call their own lines?
In self-officiated matches, yes — each side calls its own lines and gives the benefit of the doubt to opponents. Finals usually have a dedicated umpire or scorekeeper.
