Open Play Rotation: How to Organize Fair Pickleball Games

Updated August 18, 2026 · 5 min read

Open play is where most people actually fall in love with pickleball — but without a system it turns into the same four players hogging a court while everyone else waits. A good rotation keeps games fair, balanced and constantly moving.

The problem with paddle stacking

The classic "paddle rack" (line your paddle up, winners stay on) is simple but rewards strong players and punishes newcomers, who can wait 30 minutes for one game. For a welcoming session you want everyone getting roughly equal court time.

Rotation systems that work

  • Winners split / losers out — winners split up and stay, keeping games competitive but rotating partners.
  • Full rotation — all four players come off after each game and the next four go on. The fairest for court time.
  • Rating-balanced — pair a stronger player with a weaker one so games stay close.

Let matchmaking do the work

Manually tracking who's played and who's next is a headache once you have more than one court. Automatic matchmaking sorts players by games played and seats the next four who've waited longest — so nobody sits out too long and you never argue about whose turn it is. Weezcup's free Open Play tool does exactly this across as many courts as you have.

Keep score (optional)

Running a leaderboard adds a bit of friendly competition without turning open play into a tournament. Track wins and games played, and let an umpire or the players themselves update scores from a phone.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fairest open play rotation?

A full rotation — all four players come off after each game and the longest-waiting players go on next — gives everyone the most equal court time. Automatic matchmaking enforces this without manual tracking.

How do I stop the same players hogging a court?

Use a rotation that seats players by fewest games played, so newcomers and waiting players are prioritized. Weezcup's Open Play tool does this automatically across every court.

Do I need to keep score in open play?

No — open play can be purely social. If you want a bit of competition, a simple wins/games leaderboard adds fun without the structure of a full tournament.
